Stacey Solie ~
Managing Editor
I’m psyched to be serving as Managing Editor of Yucca Brevifolia. We have a rich ecosystem of independent journalism here in the high desert and it’s an honor to be able to add to it with this beautiful publication.
About me: I started writing early in my career working for the Nature Conservancy’s California program, where I documented the stories of plant ecologists, climate modelers, fisheries biologists. Scientists have front row seats to the damage being done to habitats, and it felt vital to communicate their findings as well as showcase solutions. Later I attended the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia, to improve my craft. One of my first reporting jobs was at The Point Reyes Light in West Marin where I covered incredibly creative communities living adjacent to a National Park (it’s a familiar milieu). I’ve taught narrative nonfiction writing at the University of Washington, led writing workshops for conservation scientists and been a stringer for The New York Times. Last year I was the producer of a short documentary, From the Ground Up: Voices of the Carbon Market, which premiered at NYC Climate Week and recently screened at several festivals, including the Santa Monica Awareness Film Festival. I hope to bring my experience to bear at Yucca Brevifolia by facilitating meaningful, engaging storytelling about and in partnership with this community.
In my downtime, I love watching the moonrise and playing drums in the shadows of the Sheephole Mountains in wind-whipped Wonder Valley.
